Derekh Eretz: Why Manners Matter
Community requires more than agreement. It requires habits that allow people to live, study, worship, work, and disagree without destroying one another.
The Jewish idea of derekh eretz helps us recover the importance of ordinary human conduct. Manners include listening, hospitality, self-restraint, truthful speech, respecting boundaries, keeping confidences, keeping promises, welcoming children, honoring elders, apologizing when needed, and disagreeing without humiliation.
A Torah Pursuant life should make us easier to trust, easier to talk with, and better able to live with other people.
If our study makes us more argumentative but not more faithful, more knowledgeable but not more gracious, something important has been missed. Manners are not decoration around discipleship. They are one of the places discipleship becomes visible.
